Educatie Symposium
Learning Matters

How do we educate designers for a world in rapid transition?
Climate change, geopolitical tensions, technological developments and growing social inequalities are fundamentally reshaping the role of architecture. Alongside traditional design skills such as composition, construction and material knowledge, today's architects are increasingly expected to think systemically, collaborate across disciplines, engage critically with society, and understand the ecological, technological and financial systems that shape the built environment.
Learning Matters, the second education symposium organised by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, explores how architectural education can respond to these profound shifts. How should architectural education evolve to prepare designers for an uncertain future? What knowledge, skills and pedagogical approaches are needed? And how can education equip designers not only to imagine change, but also to realise it in practice?
Bringing together educators, researchers, designers and students, the symposium explores new approaches to teaching and learning within architecture and related spatial design disciplines. Through lectures and conversations, participants will examine the evolving relationship between education, design practice and the major societal transitions of our time.
The programme is structured around two thematic strands: Ecology & Systems and Technology & Finance, exploring how new forms of knowledge, collaboration and practice can help shape the future of architectural education.
Learning Matters is organised by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) in collaboration with the editorial team of OASE 122/123 – Ecological Pedagogies, edited by Janna Bystrykh, Jantje Engels, Sereh Mandias, Elsbeth Ronner and Hans Teerds.
Admission to the event costs €27,50 (a ticket for the symposium also grants access to the exhibition).
The language of the event is English.
