Some Regret
Critical Raw Materials x Spatial Design

Critical raw materials are considered "critical" to the continued development of our modern European world. They turn up everywhere: in electric cars, wind turbines, data centres, traffic lights and cables. These are all systems that we, as spatial designers, draw into our plans, which means we are in a position to influence them. That is why we are asking: how can spatial planning contribute to a sustainable approach to critical raw materials?
At this event, the makers of the exhibition ‘Some Regret’ will talk about the artworks and the research behind them. Additionally, two experts on critical raw materials will share their perspectives.
What is the role of the spatial designer? When we draw a wind turbine into our masterplan, we are also drawing mining areas in China, Turkey, Australia and Ghana. We need to take the consequences of our drawings, plans and designs into account in our everyday decisions. Which material choices reduce our exposure to geopolitical risk? Where do we extract raw materials, and who is displaced as a result? How large should processing facilities be, and what impact do they have on the places and people that have to live alongside them? And if we stop exporting waste, where does it end up?
Can we steer towards a future that we can confidently call "desirable", or is every choice a "some-regret" measure?
Admission to the event is free with a ticket for the exhibition. Registration for this lecture is recommended, as capacity is limited.
The event will be held in Dutch.
