The exhibition “Messy Vitalities” showcases the design processes that led to five projects which, each in its own way, accommodate a wide variety of perspectives and translate these into a rich and layered architecture—ranging from the various historical layers of an existing building to the fragmented experiences of residents, to the needs of zoo animals. 

On November 6, the designers behind these projects—Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architects, Judith Pellicaan, Beta Office, and Baltussen van Schaik—will engage in a discussion. What did this multifaceted approach mean for the design process? When did different perspectives conflict or lead to surprises, and how did the design respond to them? 

The Messy Vitalities exhibition is an initiative of the Empathetic Craftsmanship curatorial program led by Margit van Schaik at the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst. It explores how a multifaceted approach can be used to foster socially engaged architectural craftsmanship. 

Admission to the event is free. Registration for this lecture is not mandatory but advisable due to limited capacity.
