Conflicting values, empathy, and nuances: How does design seek to achieve more than the sum of its parts?

For the Messy Vitalities exhibition at the IABR, Margit van Schaik, curator of Empathetic Craftsmanship at the RAVB, examined the design processes behind five projects. The result is an analysis of design nuances: moments when the design responds to the convergence of values—ranging from the historical layers of an existing building to the fragmented experiences of residents to the needs of zoo animals. 

On November 6, we’ll be speaking with the designers behind these projects: Mechthild Stuhlmacher (KSA) about Huis73, Judith Pellicaan (RAVB alumna) about her graduation project, Antwerp Zoo, Auguste van Oppen (Beta) about Wildeman Station, and Jesper Baltussen (BvS) about Huis and Studio BvS. What role did these design nuances play in their process? And what does this say about the role architects must assume in the future?

The Messy Vitalities exhibition is an initiative of the Empathetic Craftsmanship curatorial program at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. The program explores how a multifaceted approach can be used to foster socially engaged architectural craftsmanship.
