Grafted

A collage of conversations and field recordings from urban green spaces in Rotterdam, 'Grafted' is hosted and produced by gardeners from all over the world who have chosen to plant themselves in Rotterdam, addressing the importance of these spaces to different groups of the city's population.  

Grafting is a horticultural technique where parts of different organisms are joined together so that they grow as one. The link is vulnerable at first, but becomes inseparable. Taking inspiration from this, 'Grafted' is a series of audio documents about how community green spaces in the city – such as de Spoortuin – contribute to a sense of place and belonging. For many city-dwellers, especially those who have moved to Rotterdam from other countries, participating in community gardens provides a place of rootedness: a physical location that enables long-term social involvement in a foreign environment. Outside of the realms of home and work, the community garden is a place of gentle and diverse social contact.   

Grafted will broadcast between 6PM and 7PM on 27 October.
