Carbon Stories: Learning from Paris

What can we learn from Paris regarding their shift to biobased building over the recent decade? This question is the focus of this special edition of the Carbon Stories series in the occasion of Nature of Hope IABR 2024 held at the Nieuwe Instituut. This evening is generously supported by Built by Nature.

France is leading the way in biobased building, driven by national environmental legislation promoting low-carbon construction and the use of biobased materials in public projects. Paris, committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, exemplifies this movement by emphasizing timber, straw, hemp, raw earth, and natural stone in its construction policies, along with an 'end of demolition policy'. The French experience offers valuable lessons for the Netherlands and other countries aiming to transition to biobased building materials.

The Paris Biobased research project by Christina Eickmeier (architect) and Emma Diehl (landscape architect and architecture researcher) highlights the efforts of the French government, building sector, and architects over the past decade to promote low-carbon materials. This evening, key French architects will discuss the ongoing material transition in Greater Paris, the role of legislation, and the incentives that have facilitated this shift.

Carbon Stories catalyzes the conversation about the possibilities and impossibilities of a climate-positive built environment. The perspectives of the designer, financier, developer, builder, resident, consultant, and material supplier are addressed. This special edition is presented in collaboration with CHRITH & Emma Diehl with support from Built by Nature.

Carbon Stories is initiated by the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) in collaboration with GROUP A-CARBONLAB, and the KeileCollectief.
