Practice Place: Work, Labour, Action!

How to create conditions for an ecological and hopeful design practice? IABR 2024 introduces a Practice Place, a soft assembly space within the exhibition, and calls upon spatial practitioners to come together around the transformation of practice.
The position of many workers within the architecture and construction practice – of female architects, architects with a migration background, Southern and Eastern European architects on temporary contracts, migrant construction workers – remains marginalized and precarious in overlapping ways. Simultaneously, workers hold important leverage to transform the building sector into a more just and ecological practice. Working conditions are intimately connected with the economic position of the discipline as a whole. How to democratize and decarbonize architectural work? How to build alliances for a better architecture discipline between generations and positions? How to organize and unionize?
The intention of this meeting is to build connections between participants. Peggy Deamer and Josh Barnett (The Architecture Lobby) will talk about the relation between worker's rights and the possibility of a just ecological transition. Choreographer Ingrid Berger-Myhre shares exercises for moving together. NAA! (Netherlands Angry Architects) share tools for organizing from the ground up.
Work, Labour, Action! is part of a series of assemblies in the Practice Place. The gathering is documented in a growing archive in the exhibition and forms the basis for a podcast series with De Architect. The Practice Place program leads to the development of a New Narrative for Architecture and Urbanism (NNAU), which will be festively presented during the closing weekend of the biennale.
