2018 - 8th edition
THE MISSING LINK

The 8th Architecture Biennale Rotterdam focused on the spatial transformations needed to address the impending climate crisis. The Biennale explored how the design field can contribute to achieving the international objectives of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
The 8th edition raised the question of how to achieve effective spatial transformations. What prevents us from making the necessary changes, what is the missing link? This question was made concrete by looking at the Rotterdam M4H area and the North-Western European Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt Delta. This IABR paid special attention to the energy transition and to the social impact of spatial transformations.
The 8th IABR marked the beginning of an ongoing program for two Biennales. In 2018, the program took place partly in Rotterdam and partly in Brussels. The results of the research projects were shown at the 9th Biennale in 2020.
