Mark Swilling: Planetary Urbanism
The global transition to a low carbon sustainable world is a challenge that is being faced at a time when the majority of people live in cities.

The extra 2.5 billion people that will result in global population growth from 7 to 9.5 billion people will land up in African and Asian cities. It is therefore vital that cities find ways to decarbonize and become more resource efficient. The result is the proliferation of urban experiments around the world that reflect in the present what is possible on scale in the future. Swilling will discuss the significance and implications of these urban transitions.

Respondent for the lecture is Eric Frijters, architect and director .FABRIC

Mark Swilling is a member of UNEP's International Resource Panel and Distinguished Professor of Sustainable Development at Stellenbosch University, Cape Town.
